Agrotourism in Kampong Thom
Rice paddies, palm sugar, silk weaving, and riverside fishing — real farming life, open to curious travellers
Kampong Thom province is one of Cambodia's most productive agricultural regions. Its fertile plains between the Mekong and Tonle Sap systems yield some of the country's finest jasmine rice, palm sugar, silk, and freshwater fish. Agrotourism here means joining communities in their actual daily work — not a staged demonstration, but a real morning harvest, a real weaving lesson, or a real boat trip to check fish traps at 5 AM.
Where agriculture meets authentic travel
The province's agricultural calendar shapes everything — planting season brings communal labour and vivid green fields; harvest (November–January) fills the air with the smell of cut rice and brings entire villages together. Visitors who time their trip around the harvest witness one of Cambodia's most photogenic and culturally rich events.
Baray district, about 40 km east of Kampong Thom town, is the province's silk heartland. Families here raise silkworms, hand-spin thread, dye with natural plant extracts, and weave intricate patterns on traditional wooden looms — a craft passed down through generations and now recognised as a Cambodian intangible cultural heritage.
Along the Stung Sen river and its tributaries, fishing communities use traditional methods that predate the Angkorian era — cast nets, bamboo fish traps, and hand-built wooden boats. A pre-dawn fishing trip offers one of the most immersive rural experiences available in Cambodia.

Agrotourism Experiences
Rice Farm Visit & Planting
Walk the paddy fields with a farming family, learn to transplant seedlings in the wet season, or join the harvest crew in November. Includes a farm-cooked lunch with rice from the field.
Sugar Palm Experience
Watch a palm climber ascend 20 metres before dawn to collect sap, then follow the process from raw sap to finished palm sugar blocks. Taste fresh palm juice straight from the container.
Silk Weaving Workshop
Visit a Baray silk family — see silkworms, spinning wheels, natural dyeing vats, and hand looms. Try weaving a few rows yourself. Take home a hand-made silk item if you wish.
Sunrise Fishing Trip
Join local fishermen on a wooden boat at 4:30 AM to check overnight fish traps on the Stung Sen. Watch cast-net technique, help haul in the catch, and eat fresh grilled fish breakfast by the river.
Farm-to-Table Cooking Class
Harvest vegetables from a community garden, grind spices by hand, and cook traditional Kampong Thom dishes — Kuy Teav, fish amok, and palm sugar desserts — in a family kitchen.
Ploughing & Ox-Cart Ride
Rare chance to see traditional ox-cart ploughing still used in Kampong Thom's outer villages. Ride an ox-cart through the fields and learn how farmers manage land without machinery.
