Prasat Andet
A solitary brick shrine amid rice fields — Cambodia off the tourist trail
Standing alone in open farmland south of Kampong Thom town, Prasat Andet is one of Cambodia's most evocative hidden temples. Built in the 7th–8th century, this single-towered brick sanctuary sits surrounded by golden rice paddies and palm trees — completely free of crowds and entirely authentic.
The Quiet Sanctuary of the Chenla Period
Prasat Andet dates to the late Chenla Empire — a transitional period when brick construction was reaching its artistic peak before stone gradually replaced it. The single prasat tower follows the same architectural tradition as Sambor Prei Kuk but on a more intimate scale, making it a perfect companion stop on any heritage route.
The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, and a now-famous standing Vishnu statue was discovered here — now housed in the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The statue is considered one of the finest examples of early Khmer sculpture, and its graceful pose set a standard that Khmer artists would refine for centuries.
Unlike Sambor Prei Kuk, Prasat Andet sees very few visitors. Local farmers work the surrounding fields as they have for generations, and the atmosphere is one of profound stillness — exactly how most of Cambodia's ancient temples once felt before tourism arrived.

What to See
The Brick Tower
A single pre-Angkorian prasat tower with original brickwork still largely intact — delicate carved lintels and door columns that reward slow, close inspection.
Rice Field Setting
The temple sits amid working rice fields — golden in harvest season (November–January), vivid green during the rains. Extraordinary photography at golden hour.
The Vishnu Pedestal
The stone base where the famous Vishnu statue once stood is still visible inside the sanctuary — a quiet reminder that you are in the presence of a major piece of Khmer art history.
