Ancient Civilization
Walk through the birthplace of Khmer architecture — 7th-century brick sanctuaries at the heart of the Chenla Empire.
What to Expect
Sambor Prei Kuk is not Angkor — it is older, quieter, and in many ways more intimate. These 100+ brick sanctuaries were built in the 6th and 7th centuries as the capital city of Ishanapura, the heart of the Chenla Empire that laid the cultural foundations for all of Angkor. Your local guide will bring these stones to life — the flying palace reliefs, the guardian figures, the octagonal towers unique in all of Southeast Asia — and connect the ancient past to Cambodia's living culture today.
Your Experience
Hotel pick-up
Your guide meets you at your guesthouse and you head north toward the forest temples on National Road 64.
Group O — the forest sanctuary
Begin with the forest-enclosed Group O, the most atmospheric of the three, where ancient strangler figs have grown into the brick walls over centuries.
Group N — the royal temples
The largest and most decorated group. See the famous flying palaces, the eight-sided towers, and the inscriptions that record the glory of the Chenla kings.
Group S — the southern shrines
The most intimate of the three groups, with well-preserved brick carvings and a quieter atmosphere for reflection and photography.
Village lunch
Lunch at a family home near the complex — typical Kampong Thom cooking with fresh river fish, rice, a simple soup, and seasonal vegetables.
Return & riverside drop-off
Drive back to Kampong Thom town. Drop-off at your hotel or the riverside promenade — free afternoon to explore the town at your own pace.
