The Essential Day
The single best day in Kampong Thom — UNESCO temples at dawn, a sacred mountain climb, and a riverside sunset dinner. Perfect for travellers stopping between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
One Perfect Day
Early Breakfast & Departure
Quick breakfast at your guesthouse or grab a Kuy Teav from the morning market. Meet your guide and head north on National Road 64.
Sambor Prei Kuk — UNESCO Temples
Arrive as the site opens. Walk the three temple groups (N, S, O) with your guide as morning mist lifts through the forest. Marvel at octagonal towers, flying palace carvings, and ancient tree roots embracing the brick.

Village Lunch Near the Temples
Lunch at a local family restaurant near the temple complex — fresh amok, rice, and seasonal vegetables. Simple, delicious, and supporting the local community.
Phnom Santuk — Sacred Mountain
Drive 45 minutes south to Phnom Santuk. Climb the 809 steps at a relaxed pace (30–40 min). Explore the reclining Buddha, rock-carved statues, resident monks, and panoramic views.

Return to Town & Free Time
Back in Kampong Thom town. Rest, explore the riverside promenade, browse the afternoon market, or visit the provincial museum.
Stung Sen Sunset Walk
Walk the riverside as golden hour descends. Watch fishing boats, children swimming, market traders setting up. One of the most peaceful moments in provincial Cambodia.
Riverside Dinner
Dinner at a riverside restaurant. Order the giant freshwater prawns, fish amok, and whatever seasonal vegetable they recommend. Cold Angkor beer. Perfect end to a full day.
The earlier you start the better — Sambor Prei Kuk is magical in the first hours of morning light and before any tour groups arrive.
Wear comfortable walking shoes — Phnom Santuk steps can be slippery if it rained recently.
Bring water and a hat — midday between the two sites can be hot. Most of the temple site is shaded.
Best photo light is at the temples 7–9 AM and on the mountain late afternoon (if you swap the order for sunset shots).
