Planning a trip to Kampong Thom? Here's everything practical you need to know — from getting in and getting around, to what to pack and when to visit.
Visas and entry
Most nationalities can get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap airport (USD 30–45). Bring a passport photo and fill out a form at the desk. If arriving by bus from Thailand or Vietnam, you can also get a visa at land borders — take the same photo and form.
Best time to visit
November to February is the cool, dry season — perfect for temples and outdoor travel. March to May is hot and dusty (40°C / 104°F). June to October is the rainy season, with green countryside and fewer tourists — bring a light rain jacket. Avoid visiting during Khmer New Year (mid-April) when everything closes and prices spike.
What to pack
- Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton, linen)
- Sun protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
- Rain jacket or compact umbrella (November–February unlikely, but safer)
- Comfortable walking shoes — temples have uneven paths
- A sarong or lightweight scarf — dress modestly at sacred sites
- Basic medications: pain relief, anti-diarrhea, antihistamine
- Insect repellent (mosquitoes are active at dusk)
- Portable power bank — outlets are not always available outside town
